I recently had the pleasure of photographing Crystal Davis, an artist who turns recycled magazines into stunning artwork. Our goal was to capture Crystal's unique style and creative process through a branding photo session.
Setting the Scene
We chose the cozy Stilig Studio in downtown Snohomish, Washington, to demonstrate Crystal's work. While her regular workspace is her bedroom floor, where she can sprawl out in her yoga pants, and binge-watch Netflix, we felt that a studio space would best showcase her unique process. With magazines spread all around and tiny confetti-like pieces already cut up and organized by color, glue in hand, we set out to recreate her at-home process in the studio.
The Vision
The session focused on highlighting her creative process and the vibrant energy she brings to her work. We captured her carefully selecting sections of magazine pages that had clean, text-free colors and meticulously applying glue to each little strip of paper to adhere to her canvas.
Behind the Scenes
We started with candid shots of Crystal working on her art. These photos captured her concentration and joy as she cut and pasted magazine pages. Next, we took posed shots with her finished pieces. These portraits showcased Crystal's colorful and dynamic personality, reflecting the energy of her artwork.
The Results
The final photos included both candid and posed shots. The candid images offered a glimpse into Crystal's creative process, while the posed portraits highlighted her as the face of her brand. Each photo told a part of her story, from the creation process to the finished artwork.
Reflection
This session highlighted the power of photography in storytelling. Through these photos, we showcased Crystal's journey as an eco-artist, turning ordinary materials into extraordinary art. It was an honor to capture her passion and creativity.
